海嘯；tsunami

亦稱地震波（seismic sea wave）或潮波（tidal wave）。破壞性的海浪，通常由芮氏規模6.5級以上的海底地震引起。水下或沿海山崩或火山爆發也可能引起海嘯。通常用海潮來指這種海嘯，但這是一種誤稱，因為這樣的海浪同潮水沒有關係。最大的海嘯可能是發生在1703年的日本粟津海嘯，有十萬多人遇難。最壯觀的水下火山噴發在1883年淹沒了印尼的喀拉喀托島，並掀起了30公尺高的海浪，有36,000多人遇難。

中國主要的考古地點，靠近古代的都城長安（今西安），占地20平方哩（50平方公里），是由第一位擁有至高權力的皇帝：秦始皇帝，所興建的密閉陵墓。1974年，鑽井的工人發現地底下有個大型密室，裡頭大約有六千座真人大小的赤陶俑，臉部各自表現細微不同的表情，另外還有陶土鑄成的馬、武器和其他物品，組成一批陪葬的軍隊；而在附近三個密室中，也挖掘出超過一千四百具的塑像；墓葬本身至今尚未開挖。考古學者預測，要掘出這座構造複雜的陵墓的其餘部分，將花費多年時間。這座陵墓是聯合國教科文組織的世界遺產地點。

　　After attending the opening ceremony at Taipei 101 in the morning, President Chen's thoughts turned to DPP personnel matters. After an entire night's worth of secret meetings, top party members have finally agreed on who will be succeeding Chen as DPP Chairman. In reality, the series of meetings began around 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at the Presidential Office. Those seen leaving from the meetings refused to comment on any conclusions that had been reached or what was discussed. Kaohsiung City Mayor Frank Hsieh, however, did jokingly say that he and Chen merely exchanged stories on the experiences of being a grandfather. The most dramatic moment came when 蘇貞昌 rushed back from Matsu to meet with Chen. Upon hearing that Yu was not enthusiastic, Su took on the attitude he would do whatever Chen wished, finally bringing an end to this two-week drama over the party chairmanship. The series of meetings showed that Chen is still pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Su will be leading the DPP, while Hsieh will be leading the new Cabinet or taking over the post of Presidential Office Secretary General. It looks like Su and Hsieh will have many opportunities to work together in the future.

　　跨年的前夕遇上入冬以來最強的寒流也來湊熱鬧，不只是高山地區低溫跌破零度，連全台灣平地的天氣也是冷到屢屢創紀錄！目前為止淡水氣溫又比早上還要冷，只有7度左右，台北、新竹也紛紛掉到十度以下，這樣的天氣讓氣象局持續發佈低溫特報提醒民眾要注意！強烈的冷空氣持續發威，下午、晚上各地的天氣是越夜越冰冷！不只基隆、台北、彰化、嘉義只有五度，就連南投還有機會下探四度。至於南台灣也是會冷到今年最高峰，不過即使氣溫超低，但民眾想賞雪恐怕是越晚越困難。入夜之後天氣轉乾冷，跨年活動正好遇上超低溫，想要high得不發抖，最好還是要有禦寒準備。

　　When the watchmen noticed the thick smoke that was filling the air, they immediately called for help using their intercoms. 　　林班地冒煙起火，巡山員發現後，馬上以對講機通報滅火。不過山勢陡峭，人車無法到達，只好出動直昇機搭載人員，直接深入起火點執行吊掛救災。支援人力從地面開闢防火巷，同時直昇機也從大甲溪取水，展開空中投水灌救。直昇機帶來十倍的水量加入投水滅火行列。為了節省飛機來回大甲溪取水的時間，消防水車就近設置開放式水袋，供應水源，讓直昇機方便取水。經過四架直昇機吊掛水帶，不斷在起火點上空來回灌救，延燒五十公頃的森林火警很快就被撲滅，林務局逼真的演練過程，展現了森林火災動員救災的效率。

我們都想要一帆風順的人生，即使我們到頭來往往都說不清楚，自己的人生究竟算不算是幸福。

或許大多數的人生，都是五味雜陳的吧!

五味雜陳的人生，就像一鍋湯底，一開始的時候總是清清淡淡，但是不知道為什麼，清淡久了就羨慕起酸辣湯的高潮迭起，於是又加佐料又加羹湯，越加越辛辣，越加越混沌，不葷不素，又甜又鹹，弄得四不像了，回頭想要一鍋清湯，才發現已經太遲。

這樣的歷程，我們活一遍就都要走過一遭，說不清楚時只好歸納成兩個字，就叫做「人生」，人生這一鍋湯，到頭來有沒有辦法成為一道佳餚，或變得根本無法下嚥，自古至今沒有人能夠保證，但是我們終其一生在調這鍋叫做人生的萬年湯時，別忘了其實有兩個重要的禮物，是我們可以自己給自己的。

提醒我這個道理的，是一個多年的讀者，叫做阿嬌。她高職畢業以後就出了社會，當時二姊告訴她，有兩件事情一定要去做，一是買保險，二是要行善。買保險，是因為父親在她國一時因車禍過世，家人因為父親沒有保險，經過長長的掙扎好不容易才走過來，所以深深明白買保險不是為了自己，而是為家裡其它人著想；至於行善捐款，並不在乎金額大小，只在心意，或許會有機會幫助到身處絕望的人。

保險和行善，乍聽之下一點都不像人生的禮物，但是仔細想想，確實很有道理。多一點保險就像多一點薪火，可以讓不至於這鍋湯不至於在還沒有成熟就斷炊；而行善就像分一碗熱湯給需要的陌生人，不但有機會溫暖別人，說不定還可以從別人那裡，提醒自己這鍋湯是否不知不覺熬得太鹹太苦。

「姊姊的話，我聽進去，剛開始，並不是很瞭解背後的涵意，但是我一直照做，我不去問為什麼，別急！急了，就享受不到完成時的甜美，」阿嬌說，「就像我半工半讀，唸夜二專時，當時的自己也不去問辛不辛苦，白天努力工作，晚上乖乖去上課，過了三年，我沒有參加畢業典禮，但在拿到畢業證書，那一晚，晚上十一點回家的路上，我痛快的流下淚，那時，我才讓自已，放下繁忙的每天行程，知道自已做到了！」

煮人生這鍋湯，我們都曾一度急著讓自已完成自已的目標或行程，最好可以同時完成很多事情，直到老來，卻又巴不得一切都慢下來，最好時光倒流，但人生的事情，又怎能讓我們自已安排哪！

「我曾經恨！為什麼我要經歷那麼多風霜？但是回頭想想，他們帶給我成長，智慧，和自已本不明瞭的堅強，那我又怎能怪罪命運的安排，是一次又一次的事件，讓我成為現在的自已，我要感恩過去所發生的人事物，沒有他們，就沒有現在的我?」

可不是嗎? 當阿嬌知道我在幫忙慈善團體建立孤兒院，她說:

『你會做好事，我並不驚訝，只在於那勇氣和時間吧了！你以前曾經在某一篇文章中寫到，你在公車上遇到一位故人，他在大陸從事希望小學的工程，你很佩服他的精神，其實你深受他的感動，我們都會被那樣的人所影響，尤其，這個人又是你已經早就認識，只是那時的你因緣未到，人就是被所經過的事情所感化的吧！你只是成名太早，一切事情太過順利，世上沒有速成的事情，好人本來就難當，他一定會經過很多的磨練，你心中太想完成它，相對你會覺得難成，所以我替那些孤兒，再一次的謝謝你，因為你在他們最需要幫忙的時侯出現，你會在他們生命中，烙下最深印記的人，他們不見得有機會，當面跟你說聲謝謝，但是他們的快樂，不是你所想樂見的嗎？』

我們都希望自己擁有赤子之心，但難掩生活歷練養成的多疑猜忌。往往因為受過苦，就難去相信陌生人的善意。其實世間的道理，或許不是非黑即白那麼單純，但是人生的忠告，可以就像買一點保險，做一點好事那樣簡單明瞭，這點我是深信不疑的。

　　一月一號開始，倒垃圾不能再像這樣什麼都不分，扔了就算。包括台北基隆新竹台中縣市，嘉義台南宜蘭和高雄縣市等十個城市，都強制實施垃圾分類，倒垃圾之前，民眾必須分好資源，一般垃圾和廚餘，三個月宣導期，四月一號開罰，不分清楚，會被罰1200到6000元。除了垃圾分清楚，電視頻道一號開始大搬風，2到25頻道是適合全家觀賞的頻道，其中華視主頻以及教育頻道，就在十一和十二台。過去喝的豆漿，吃的玉米是不是基因改造，不但沒人知也沒人管，現在所有基因改造食品都要標示。台北市南陽街機車退出騎樓，元旦開始收費，每天二十元。還有台北市立醫院大變革，原先十家市立醫院，改制成為一家聯合醫院，一家就診，十家服務醫療改變還包括戒菸補助每次提高到400元。省錢的還包括，郵局局內轉帳，手續費降為五元，孕婦產前檢查，增加愛滋病篩檢，還有勞保職業災害項目，雇主負擔比例降為0.27%。

　　6 year old 葉佳妮 clung to her grandfather as she sobbed. Crying is a normal reaction for children, but for Yeh, it was a release of all the horrors she had endured over the past several days. On Christmas Eve, Yeh flew with her parents from Suzhou to Phuket. Yeh was playing with her mother on the beach on the 26th when the tsunami struck, separating mother from daughter. Yeh managed to cling onto a tree for a day and night before she was discovered by rescue personnel. Yeh was unable to communicate with the hospital staff due to language barriers, but wrote down her grandfather's telephone number in Taiwan, enabling her father to find her. Yeh's father remains in Phuket, hoping for word of his wife's whereabouts. Yeh has since returned to Taiwan and is in the care of relatives. Finally able to get a restful night of sleep, now her biggest hope is that her missing mother can return home with her father.

　　花蓮的花岡山運動場，一大早聚集了做早操的民眾，球場上也有趕到學校上學前先熱身打球的學生，在一大片綠色草地上練槌球，是媽媽們比較喜歡的運動把握上班前時間趕緊運動，看起來，花蓮的居民的確都比較喜歡運動，在最喜歡運動的城市排行榜，排名第一位居榜首，包括縣長謝深山自己，也熱愛運動，不但參加早泳會還固定跑步，帶頭讓縣民動起來，不過，縣長說，花蓮縣人口結構四分之一都是原住民，雖然愛運動，但也愛喝酒，讓肥胖人口比例排名25個縣市中的第二名縣長說，希望因為縣民喜歡運動，能讓肥胖人口比例降低，讓花蓮縣真正變成一個健康的城市。

　　They wear bicycle helmets and gloves. They carry walkie-talkies and their bikes have lights. These are the new bicycle police preparing to patrol the Love River tourist area. Passers by were shocked to see this strange sight because it was exactly what they were hoping for, and foreigners in the area have expressed their approval as well. It costs more than NT$12,000 to outfit one of these bicycles. Three officers patrol the area from 8am to 10pm, serving the community and guaranteeing public safety. 　　The group of volunteers arrived at the Hualien 吉安鄉 home of 90 year old veteran Mr. Tsai. At first, Mr. Tsai refused the help of the volunteers, but after they performed a song for him, Mr. Tsai finally acquiesced and let them into his home to clean. Mr. Tsai lives alone in this 5-ping room. His possessions lay strewn about. Not only is this building unfinished, but it has also caught on fire twice. In order to help Tsai have a happy new year, the volunteers from the police station came here to clean his home. Mr. Tsai begins to tell them stories from his past. The time flies by and in a short while, his home is clean and tidy, and gratitude and appreciation flow in his heart.

　　一群志工來到花蓮吉安鄉一位90歲蔡姓榮民的家中幫忙清掃，不過蔡姓榮民剛開始抗拒這一群志工的幫忙，還好志工們讓他唱了一首歌後終於能夠幫他進行打掃。90歲的蔡姓榮民只有一個人居住，就在不到五坪的房間內，東西是到處堆置，這一棟房子不但沒有完工，還曾失火兩次，為了幫助蔡姓榮民度過新年，花蓮吉安分局的派出所特別安排志工配合慈濟志工清掃。老人家自顧自的說著當年的故事，大家則是幫忙幹活。不一會兒，慈濟的志工加入，也讓清掃動作迅速不少。雖然老人家不說，但是相信能夠體會這一份心意。

Many of the busy, stressed-out professionals who come here say that after just a few classes, they feel much more relaxed and at peace. Dan Ming-Shu takes a relaxed approach to Tai-chi instruction which allows people without any exposure to it to gradually experience the fun of it. Taking a little time after work to practice Tai-chi, calm their spirits and strengthen their bodies may be just what many of today's busy professionals need to stay healthy.

＜ 李傑遞辭呈?國防部說法 ＞
　　　　Has Defense Minister Li Chieh actually resigned his post? Legislators expressed concern and the Deputy Minister of Defense made no clear statement. Legislators received word through military sources that in last Monday's military briefing, Minister Li offered his resignation to President Chen because of the stalled Arms Purchase Bill. However, afraid that Li's departure would create a leadership vacuum in the Ministry, President Chen hoped that he would stay on until the new cabinet is set up. Actually, this is not the first time Li has proffered his resignation. On Sept 24 of this year, Li submitted a petition expressing his willingness to resign. It is worthy of note that since the continued failure of the bill after the legislative elections, Li has been asked to report to the Defense committee on two occasions but in both cases he failed to appear. This is a marked departure from his previous willingness to step into the line of fire in support of the bill. But as to whether reports of Li's resignation are true or not, the Minister's office has yet to give a clear answer.

The media frenzy following Lee seems to surpass that of his visit to Osaka three years ago. Wherever Lee goes, the cameras never stop. Over thirty different media houses from Japan and elsewhere around the world are covering Lee's Japan trip. Some television stations even have two teams covering the story. Of the different media members, six of them are from Mainland China, including Xinhua News Agency. Television stations aren't the only ones covering the story. Lee's Japan visit has appeared on the front page of major Japanese newspapers. Asahi Shimbun, one of the largest newspapers in Japan, had significant coverage of Lee's second visit to Japan as a purely recreational visit. Another major newspaper in Nagoya, Chunichi Press, covered the story on the front page and stated that with Lee's visit, the relationship between Japan and China becomes even more worrisome. The more low-key Lee tries to stay, the more attention he receives. In the next few days, Lee will continue to be the center of attention in Japan.

　　　　The coldest air mass this winter has struck the island, with snowfall in the mountains and continuous drops in temperatures on land. Early Wednesday morning in Tamsui saw a low of 10.6 degrees Celsius, nearly as cold as the winter's record low of 10.4 degrees Celsius on late Tuesday evening. In the areas of Hsinchu, Taichung and Yilan, temperatures remained at 11 degrees. In the mountains of Yushan and 合歡山, subzero temperatures also set new records. As the cold shows no signs of wavering, the Central Weather Bureau has dispatched an unprecedented low-temperature alert. In face of the next strong cold current, the Bureau has lowered predicted lows a total of three times. Friday night-New Year's Eve going into early Saturday morning will be the coldest yet, with temperatures in Northern and Central Taiwan estimated to drop to 5 degrees. The Northesastern and Southern parts of Taiwan are estimated to drop below 10 degrees Celsius. As to chances of snowfall, the Bureau remarked the next two days will see the highest possibilities for snow. But regardless of precipitation, the entire island will be shrouded in a cold spell until next Tuesday.

尤其下一波寒流來勢洶洶,氣象局三度下修未來最低溫度,預計禮拜五晚上到週六清晨跨年這段時間天氣最寒冷,北部、中部下探五度,東北部、南台灣更是全在十度以下!至於未來還有沒有機會再下雪,氣象局則說，明後兩天最有可能。其實不管水氣多不多,台灣地區未來幾天到下週二之前，各地清晨、晚上都會凍得讓人直發抖了!

Are they fish boats sunken by the disastrous tidal wave? The National Space Program Office says it would require the assessment of other experts to draw a conclusion. The authority also indicated that, should there be the need; the ROCSAT-2 satellite will continue to monitor the disaster areas and provide free images to facilitate relief efforts.

　　　　The Community Rehab Center housed in two residential buildings on this quiet lane is actually a home for mental patients. Originally, they were the homes of Dr. Lin Ben-Tang and his father. After a renovation of the facilities and providing rehab curriculum to the community, mental patients will be able to come and go on their own. Dr. Lin is very grateful to his father for the new face on this old house because it was the elder Lin's home for 30 years. The father said that he was willing to give up his home and move into a dorm with his son when he saw the heart he had for healing patients with mental illnesses. The elder Mr. Lin works as a volunteer on the premises, caring for the patients together with his son. In opening this space, they are breaking down societal prejudices against people with mental illnesses and have even convinced some of the neighbors to cooperate with them in their work. This father son pair is doing a truly admirable work.

　　　　清幽的小巷子裡,兩戶民宅建構的社區復健中心,實際上是精神病患的照顧機構,原本這裡是林本堂老父親的住所,空間更新之後,引進社區復健課程,將來精神病患者可以自由進出。老房子有了新樣貌,林本堂最感謝父親的體諒,因為這裡是爸爸住了30年的老家。捨棄老家搬到宿舍與兒子同住,林老先生說,因為他看到兒子對精神病患的用心。老爸爸在這裡擔任義工,和兒子一同照顧精神病患者。開放的空間,打破外界對精神病患的隔閡.甚至他們還說服鄰居一起來幫忙,這一對父子的精神,讓人欽佩.

　　　　The memorial service for the late 蔡萬霖was held on a damp Tuesday morning, with soft rain drizzling down. The 81 year old tycoon is buried in 金石園 in 瑞芳; the service was held at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Visitors who paid respect included Chairman of the Far Eastern Group Douglas Hsu, Chairman of the Acer Group Stan Shi, among other prominent figures in the private sector.
　　Born in 竹南 Town, Miaoli in 1924, 蔡萬霖, began his business trademarked "Wan" at the age of 17. Tsai then delved into the insurance business, later on expanding his empire to medical care, finance, construction and finally to be named as the wealthiest Chinese by Forbes Magazine. In the aftermath of the 921 earthquakes, Tsai set up a fund worth 350 million NT to support relief efforts. To this day, he is praised as a philanthropist.
　　Under accompaniment of friends, 蔡萬 霖 walked to the end of his legendary life. His entrepreneurial spirit, however, will live on like the spirit of the Cathay Enterprises tree.

　　　　一大早細雨綿綿，享年八十一歲的蔡萬霖，下葬在瑞芳的金石園後，週二上午在國父紀念館舉行追思會，包括遠東集團總裁徐旭東、宏碁施振榮等，幾乎所有企業界的大老都前來跟這位傳奇的台灣首富致意。1924年出生於苗栗竹南鎮的蔡萬霖，在十七歲的時候，就創立【萬】字號商行，隨後投入保險業，一路奮鬥下，企業版圖橫跨保險、醫療、金融、工程等等，更榮膺美國富比世雜誌的華人首富，他還在921的時候，捐出三億五千萬的賑災基金，樂善好施的精神，一直為人所稱頌。在各界好友的陪伴下，蔡萬霖走完傳奇的一生，而他的創業精神，就像國泰的大樹一樣，將生生不息。

One media advertising company will be giving out presents instead of bonuses due to a poor year. The presents are only tissues and cookies. ＜ 救難先遣隊 拂曉出發了 ＞
　　　　These guys in red shirts and red hats are volunteers from the ROC International Headquarter rescue team. They are headed for the disaster area for relief work. In the airport lobby are provisions and equipment for rescue. They are sending immediate support. And private organizations are not the only ones showing support. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formed a 10-man disaster assessment team headed for Indonesia. Early in the morning, after the induction ceremony, the team took off on their mission, taking with them tents, sleeping bags and basic provisions. In the wake of disaster, Taiwan steps up to its duties as a part of the international community.

　　　　After three years of waiting, former President Lee Teng-hui finally got his wish and returned to Japan. Outside the airport, a group of people were waiting for Lee, and broke out into screams when Lee appeared. Among the group were members of the Lee's Friends Association and the Alumni Association of Lee's former school, Kyoto University. Lee was in good spirits when he arrived in Japan. Apart from talking about his itinerary, he also discussed the future direction of the TSU. Lee has great hopes for the party. Although China protested Lee's visit to Japan, Japan still issued a visa to Lee. Lee will stay in Japan for seven days.

＜ 春節的包機 國民黨腹案 ＞
　　　　The Chinese New Year is approaching. Arranging for the millions of Taiwanese businessmen in Mainland China to return home is a considerable task at hand. Chartering planes is the most efficient method, but negotiations with the Mainland on the situation have not yet materialized. The KMT has proposed to implement the 2002 flight chartering plans for this year. Planes will be provided by Taiwan. However, in 2002, chartered flights were only available from Shanghai to Taipei and flights had to stopover in Hong Kong or Macau. This year they hope to add Guangzhou and Beijing to the plan. They also wish to eliminate the stopover in order to save precious time. Chartered flights can only bring a small fraction of the millions of Taiwanese businessmen home. One other motivation behind the plan is to relax cross-strait tensions. The KMT will meet with the Mainland Affairs Council in hopes of speeding up the plan to bring Taiwanese businessmen home for the holidays.

　　　　In the 2004 National Defense white paper outlined by the Chinese government, it clearly states that China will crush Taiwan's independence at all costs. Take a look at its national defense budget. In year 2000 a total of 170.7 billion was allotted. In 2002, 190.7 billion was set aside. By 2004, that number grew to 211.7 billion. The Ministry of National Defense says this is just a tip of the iceberg. According to the Ministry, China has continuously beefed up its military powers to become a source of chaos in the Asia-Pacific region. And to maintain peace across the Strait, passing the 610.8 billion arms purchase act is imperative. In the wake of continual growth of China's defense powers, the Ministry of National Defense urges Taiwanese people to be on the alert.

However, doctors caution the public that more studies are needed before a conclusion can be drawn. Bottles of honey and honey products are still flying off the shelves in stores though due to the many other health benefits. Doctors say that taking in a daily dose of honey can only help and will not harm the body, but whether it really has cancer-fighting properties remains to be seen.

　　　　Many people probably aren't used to the sight of a black Santa Claus, but the children notice nothing out of the ordinary as they play with them. At this kindergarten in Kaohsiung's 鳳山 , the teachers use humor as an integral teaching accessory. School owner David has a wonderful relationship with his students, but ten years ago when he first arrived in Taiwan, his job searches turned up mostly dead ends. Persevering, he opened up his own bilingual kindergarten four years ago, making his own dreams come true. He has also married a Taiwanese woman, and they have a daughter. Because business is so good, his two younger brothers have also moved to Taiwan to help out at the school. The sight of the three brothers having fun with the children is a sight now familiar to area residents.

　　　　The graceful flowers accompanying Faina Chiang's late portrait are a resemblance of her kindness and generosity. The funeral ceremony was simple and solemn, guided under Pastor周聯 華. Family members mourned as they send the Former First Lady on her last trip. President Chen and Vice President Lu showed up early in the morning for the public memorial service with sorrow, and KMT Chairman 連戰 leading other KMT members paid their tributes to their beloved and respected late widow of Mr.Chiang Jing Kuo. PFP Chairman James Soong also came back from the U.S. with his wife to attend the ceremony. After everyone paid their tributes and the KMT heavy-weights covered flags over the casket, the casket was then moved to Keelung for cremation. It's been 17 years since the passing away of 蔣經國, and now Faina Chiang's ashes shall be next to him in 頭寮.

Earlier on it had been speculated that DPP caucus whip 張俊雄 would take on the additional role of Chairman. Since Chang confirmed he would not be running, it is now rumored You Shyi-kun would take on the job after handing the Premiership to the new cabinet leader. The registration period, which will last a total of 5 days, has the nation anticipating just who will be joining the race. If You Shyi-kun does not register by the deadline, President Chen may need to personally conduct coordinations.

＜ 俞揚和致哀 章孝嚴出國 ＞
　　　　3 daughters-in-law, 4 grandsons, and other close family members are all present as Mrs. Faina Chiang was quietly laid in the casket. This is the end of her of life journey. All the Chiang family members are present except for Faina Chiang's most beloved only daughter 蔣 孝章, because she's very sick and could not make it back from the states. However, her husband 俞揚和 came back for her and brought with him a letter that 蔣孝 章wrote for her mother. The content of the letter was very touching. She wrote from a Chinese saying in how a mother cow licks the calf to show deep motherly love; therefore maternal love is the greatest love of all. As the only daughter in the family, she received much love and attention. The letter went on describing how even though she was born and raised overseas, she still maintained the traditional Chinese womanhood. 蔣孝 章 wishes that her mother's soul and spirit can now return to her beloved husband. In regards to the public's concern of whether 章孝嚴 would attend the funeral ceremony, he went with his wife to Malaysia on Sunday to prevent from chance of awkward moments.

　　　　At 6 a.m. on Monday morning, PFP Chairman James Soong and his wife 陳 萬水 were greeted at the airport by PFP personnel and Legislative Yuan President 王金平. After the elections took place, Soong said that his party would continue to support Wang in the Legislative Yuan. Therefore, Wang met Soong at the airport to show his good intentions. Previously, rumors had swirled that Chen was so unhappy with her husband's political aspirations that she left for the US, and Soong traveled to the US to bring his wife home. However, at the airport on Monday, Soong and Chen walked hand in hand to prove that the rumors of marital discord were false. Soong can therefore focus all his attention on the pan-blue merger.

　　　　It has been 5 years since the devastating 921 earthquakes. How have the victims gotten by during this period? These photographs record the beauty of the reconstructed Nantou town of Jiji, where the center of the quakes hit. Tea farmers harvest their crop; children laugh without cares. Residents work together to rebuild their homes and restart their lives. Through the camera, the daily lives of the victims are recorded on photographs. The pictures show their courage in surviving the devastations and their vitality after the reconstruction. The 921 Image Exhibit will be on display until January 15th. Interested individuals are welcome to Red Theatre to witness this part of history.

＜ 最後衛武營 正變的儀式 ＞
　　　　As the white-haired former serviceman lifts the paintball gun, one can see that years of military training still remain in him. The group of former soldiers competing against Kaohsiung County Magistrate 楊秋 興 are all servicemen who were trained at this army training center, and just like the compound, they are all 76 years old this year. The yellowed discharge papers are a part of history, and the old soldiers say that never in their wildest imagination would they have guessed that the old military compound would be turned into an art and music park. Yang has invited all of them to attend the New Year's concert which will be held here on the evening of the 31st. Yang says that he hopes that all the soldiers who once sweated and were trained here will return to witness the historical moment.

＜ 花鼓節遊街 非洲來參加 ＞
　　　　The International Hakka Drum Festival hosts parades and performances every night. Among them is a dance group all the way from Africa, which performs light dance to traditional instruments. The grand sounds of traditional Hakka drums lead a procession of drum players, lined to resemble a centipede. This mother and 2 sons join the parade with pots and pans serving as their musical instrument. This signifies awareness for environmental protection. There are also a number of residents playing homemade instruments to entertain spectators. The International Hakka Drum Festival will be held until the wee hours of New Year's Day. Residents across the island are welcome to watch performances put on at Hsinchu County Government Square. In addition to Hakka drums, the highlight of the festival will be the countdown show on New Year’s Eve. An estimated 10,000 viewers will attend.

　　　　國際花鼓節每天晚上都有遊行踩街的活動,來自非洲的團體算是最遠來的貴賓,傳統的樂器加上輕快的舞步,算是最high的表演。傳統的客家大花鼓以雄壯豪邁的鼓聲打頭陣,而緊追在後的就是聯成一長串的蜈蚣鼓陣,像這位太太帶著兩個兒子,以自家的鍋子做成敲擊樂器參加遊行,強調是環保概念另外引人注目的是有許多民眾,以自行設計的裝備,背著一個鼓邊走邊敲,成為一人鼓隊相當富有創意國際花鼓節表演時間直到元旦凌晨,喜歡花鼓的民眾從今天起都可以到新竹縣政府廣場欣賞各式各樣的花鼓表演,最壓軸的活動是在月底的跨年晚會,估計將會吸引上萬人參加。
